About us

NeuroKnown is a small assessment service in Australia, embedded in lived experience, neuroaffirming care and collaboration.

Assessments are completed by Hat, a multiply neurodivergent speech pathologist and neurodevelopmental practitioner, alongside other members of an external multi-disciplinary team.

Assessment Information

  • All assessments are completed within a multi-disciplinary team (alongside occupational therapists and/or psychologists)
  • Assessments are detailed and focus on supporting identity exploration, not just a checklist for diagnosis
  • Our approach is not reductionist. We understand masking and the range of experiences of autistic individuals
  • Sessions are not solely focused on standardised assessments and observations; we look deeper into internal experiences so that you feel completely seen and heard

Autism assessments shouldn’t have to feel like a test. Instead, they can be empowering, collaborative and a positive experience. Our sessions are discussion-based, giving you the time and space to explore your experiences in a safe space. We aren’t just interested in what we can see on the surface, we want to learn about your internal world.

Lived Experience Focus

As an assessor, I have lived experience of autism and ADHD alongside Complex Post-Traumatic Disorder (CPTSD) and chronic illnesses. After going through the autism assessment process personally, it is important to me that I provide others with the opportunity to be validated, heard and respected whilst exploring their neurotype.

The assessment process doesn’t have to feel like a test, being scrutinised or pressurised. Sessions are discussion focused and an exploration of identity with a neuroaffirming framework.

We specialise in the overlap of autism and:

  • Chronic illness
  • ADHD
  • Complex PTSD
  • Pervasive Drive for Autonomy (PDA)
  • Masking
  • Different communication identities (e.g. semi-speaking or a part-time Alternative & Augmentative Communication (AAC) user).
